Roof Pitch Guide

Pitch is the angle of your roof slope, measured in degrees from horizontal. It changes which materials you can use and how the roof is priced.

Typical bands

  • Flat / Low: 0 to 15 degrees
  • Medium: 16 to 35 degrees - most family homes
  • Steep: 36 degrees and above - period properties, complex roofs

Why pitch matters

  • Material minimum pitches: slate needs a steeper roof than interlocking concrete tiles
  • Steeper roofs have more actual roof area per square metre of floor, so covering costs more
  • Steep roofs are slower and safer-access work can affect labour
  • Very low slopes need membrane systems rather than tiles

Plan area vs roof area

A 100 m² footprint at a steeper pitch has more actual sloped roof area than the same footprint at a low pitch. Our estimator accounts for this when you tell us the pitch.
